Fully paid PhD. position in plasma-wave interaction
Electromagnetics Research Group
Ghent University, Belgium

Modeling the interaction between electromagnetic waves and plasma for fusion applications is very challenging. In recent years this problem was tackled (by Wouter Tierens) using innovative FDTD techniques. The research resulted in a number of publications and a PhD. titled “Finite Element and Finite Difference Based Approaches for the Time-Domain Simulation of Plasma-Wave Interactions”. Two major achievements of the research are the formulation of a new, provably stable, implicit FDTD-method that can be hybridized with traditional explicit approaches and its application, for the first time, to model warm plasma behaviour.

The purpose of the proposed PhD. is to continue the research and to further explore the modeling of warm and hot plasma. Special attention could be devoted to non-uniform plasma, nonlinear effects and/or code parallelization in order to model large scale problems.
