Reflection seismics and associated methods, such as traveltime/waveform tomography, are used to generate high-resolution images of the Earth's interior. The acquired data contain geometrical information on geological structure and on the physical properties of the material that the waves have propagated through. The geophysics program is currently running projects involving studies of major crustal structures of the Baltic Shield, including the Swedish Deep Drilling Program (SDDP), mineral exploration and geological modeling of major mineral belts, geological storage of CO2, siting and/or monitoring of nuclear waste repositories and geohazards.



Research focus is on (1) structural interpretation of reflection seismic data based on traditional processing methods, (2) monitoring CO2 geological storage sites, (3) developing novel processing methods for hardrock conditions, (4) near-surface studies of clay-related landslides, and (5) integrating results from the field data with other geophysical and geological data. The geophysics program runs its own ~ 500-channel (cabled and wireless) seismic acquisition system and uses modern processing software. The PhD candidate will perform research within the field of applied geophysics related to any (or combination) of the above-mentioned research topics. Potential projects are, but not limited to, (1) surface and borehole seismic methods for near-surface applications, (2) developing processing algorithms for improving seismic images of shallow and deeper (down to the Moho) parts of regional-scale offshore data, (3) shear-wave seismic data acquisition and imaging, (4) seismic modeling of mineral deposits or their hostrock structures in general, and (5) petrophysical studies including seismic anisotropy and attenuation. The PhD candidate will work within a larger research program with other candidates and researchers from Sweden and abroad.
