The Department of Electrical Engineering invites applicants for a 3-year PHD position at our Centre for Electric Technology. The study will be carried out in connection with the Nikola Project which aims at issues related to the successful integration of Electric Vehicles (EV) in the power systems. Three topics are envisaged:
  • The need for thoroughly and systematically investigating cost-saving services that the EV can offer end-users, grid and power system. If this is not done, EV integration may prove more expensive for society than necessary.
  • The lack of research on dependencies and synergy between the distribution grid level, the user level and the system-wide level services. The power system cannot benefit from EV integration if the operation of the distribution grid and end user demands are not considered at the same time.
  • The need for testing and validating enabling technologies that will be used across different countries and vendors in Europe and which will make EV services a reality. If the EV and the Supply Equipment (EVSE = Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) standards and technology do not support EV services there is little chance they will be used in the years to come.
Job description
The PhD candidate’s main duty will be the analysis of the distribution services that the EVs can provide to the network, mitigating adverse effects of introducing various types of distributed energy resources into the distribution grid and applying new control concepts for their active interaction with EVs.
The services can include a number of the following:
  • Voltage control and congestion mitigation for EV (dis)charging
  • Co-existence with other Distributed Energy Resources (DER)
  • Vehicle-To-Home
  • Microgrid applications
The research will be mainly related to the activities of the current project, but not strictly limited to the framework of it.
