Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application: PhD position in experimental nuclear structure physics at the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
The research group in experimental nuclear structure physics is conducting research on exotic atomic nuclei with an excess of protons or neutrons compared to the stable nuclei. The present research activities mainly concern studies of nuclei in the mass region around the proton-rich doubly-magic nucleus 100Sn and of the most collective nuclei in the region around 170Dy. The knowledge of the structure of these nuclei is also of nuclear astrophysical interest, for the understanding of the processes in which the elements are created in the Universe.
The experimental activities take place mainly at the European accelerator laboratories INFN-LNL in Italy, GSI in Germany and GANIL in France. The gamma-ray spectrometer AGATA (Advanced GAmma Tracking Array), which recently came into operation at INFN-LNL, is one of the major instruments for the nuclear physics experiments. The nuclear structure group in Uppsala takes actively part in the development of AGATA and of other detector system, for example for detection of neutrons, which are used together with AGATA.
The PhD student is expected to participate in and take the responsibility for the planning and performing of experiments and for the analysis and interpretation of data obtained with AGATA. A participation in the further developments of AGATA and other detector systems is also desirable.
