3 year funded Multidisciplinary research work. New research field related to the fast developing High Performance Fiber Optics Communication field using the mathematical tools of Wireless Communications based on Information Theory.
Description
Fiber Optic communications are today the most performing communication medium. But due to the increase of traffic on actual Fiber Optic systems channel limits are being attained. Research on channel equalization and coding are quite new in this field when compared to Wireless technologies.
A channel model (analytic) will be established based on the propagation equation (Non Linear Schrdinger Equation) in an optical fiber including non-linear effects of the optical fiber and of optical amplifiers. Noise sources will also be considered mostly from the lasers and from the optical amplifiers. For these components noise statistics cannot always be considered as Gaussian.
Performance calculations based on the channel model using equalization techniques with adapted coding will be implemented using Matlab or C programming languages. Experimental verifications can also be considered.
