Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application: PhD position in Linear and Non-linear VUV and X-ray Atomic and Molecular Physics at the Department of Physics and Astronomy with earliest possible starting date 2012-01-01.

Project description: A PhD student position is available within the Division of Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics at Uppsala University. The funding period is 4 years, or 5 years if 20 % departmental duties are included.

The Division of Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics carries out world-class research on the electronic structure and dynamics of matter. The division has a strong background in instrument development for these purposes and uses frequently state-of-the art, large-scale VUV and X-ray light sources for the actual scientific investigations.

The PhD project announced here concerns the use of magnetic bottle electron correlation spectrometers to study single - and multi-photon ionisation processes of atoms, molecules, and clusters, aiming at detailed understanding of matter exposed to VUV and X-radiation. The experimental work will be performed in house at the ngstrm laboratory, at Synchrotron Radiation facilities such as BESSY-II in Berlin as well as at unique, world-leading X-ray Free Electron Laser sources such as the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at Stanford, California etc.
