A major part of the EU ENIAC project - DeNeCoR project will be focused on creating coexistent therapeutic devices and diagnostic systems with an introduction of nano-electronic neuromodulation devices in the healthcare market and extension of the European market for diagnostic and imaging systems. The project ensures coexistence between therapeutic systems and imaging systems enabling both advancements in diagnostics (optimized MRI, ultrasound imaging, EEG and MRI), targeted therapy (DBS and TMS) and image guided intervention therapy (TMS combined with MRI).
DeNeCoR project will investigate novel Transcranial Magnetic Stimulator (TMS) with focused spatial localization. The main emphasis of the current PhD project is to investigate the advanced TMS system compatible with MRI. This requires the modeling, design and analysis of a novel magnetic field generating coil array(s) system which allow high focus in stimulation and larger brain coverage resulting in a better therapeutic treatment. This phased array-like approach will require intelligent and distributed control of power delivered to each coil element.
Each coil element needs its own power amplifier with multi-plexer control between all power amplifiers in order to generate the desired focused field. Distribution and miniaturization of power electronics and sensors are key for a successful implementation. Moreover the new TMS system should be MRI compatible and withstand the strong magnetic fields and handle the strong Lorentz force caused by the interaction with the MRI scanner.
