The PhD position will be embedded in the Molecular Cell Biology group of the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute at the University of Groningen. Founded in 1614, the University of Groningen enjoys an international reputation as one of the oldest and leading research universities in Europe.

The Molecular Cell Biology group studies the biology of peroxisomes in yeast. The research is strongly multidisciplinary and includes molecular biology, biochemistry and microscopy (electron microscopy, fluorescence microscopy). The group provides a lively, internationally oriented, scientific environment with excellent facilities.



The goal of this PhD project is to understand de novo peroxisome formation.
Peroxisomes are important cell organelles that occur in all eukaryotes. In man dysfunction of these organelles leads to severe diseases that often are lethal. We use yeast as a model organism to understand how peroxisomes are formed at the molecular level. Currently, the mode of peroxisome development is heavily debated. Peroxisomes have long been considered to be autonomous organelles that multiply by fission of pre-existing ones.

However, the organelles also may arise de novo. At present, it is unclear to which extent these proliferation processes contribute to the total peroxisome population per cell. We anticipate that this project will contribute to resolving the above fundamental question and will provide the first contours of the blueprint of the de novo peroxisome formation machinery.
