PhD position related to microbial production of raw materials for fish feed

The Department of Biotechnology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) announces up to two PhD fellowships in the field of using cultivated heterotrophic and autotrophic microorganisms as raw materials for fish feed. The fellowship is for a period of three years without teaching duties, but may be extended for a total period of four years, including 25 % teaching duties at the department.

The position is organized at the Department of Biotechnology. Currently, there are 10 professors, 2 associate professors, 3 adjunct professors and about 30 PhD research fellows and postdoctoral positions appointed at the Department of Biotechnology. The project aims at developing heterotrophically and autotrophically cultivated microorganisms (bacteria and marine microalgae) as raw materials for fish feed. Focus will be on strain improvement related to nutritional requirements of fish and increasing the production efficiency of the cultures. Optimized production of n-3 fatty acids will be given special attention. The positions are a part of a collaboration between the Department of Biotechnology and the Department of Biology at NTNU. The supervision of the PhD candidates will be done by a core supervising team to facilitate the multidisciplinary of the project. In case two candidates are hired, their PhD projects will be tightly coordinated.
