The Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, Faculty of Sciences at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in the area "Seismic modelling of chalk" commencing 14 October 2013 or soon thereafter.

Project description
The Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management at the Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen (Denmark) hereby offers a fully funded PhD position. The candidate filling the position will become part of an interdisciplinary and dynamic team of international experts in geophysics, sedimentology and palaeontology.

The PhD research will be focused on modelling of seismic wave propagation in chalk rocks, which form important reservoirs for oil and gas in the North Sea. The PhD project aims at improving the understanding of the relation between characteristics of the seismic signal and differences in layering geometries, fluctuations in the petrophysical parameters and, more generally, variation in the depositional/diagenitic settings. To achieve this objective, seismic wavefield modelling of shot-gathers will be conducted, and it will be investigated how the signals originating from the chalk heterogeneity propagate.



Moreover, the way the different reflected and scattered waves from the chalk affect the common-midpoint gathers and the final stacked section is analyzed, and the modeling results will be compared to seismic data acquired over chalk formations in the North Sea and surrounding areas.

The project will be carried out within the framework of the Centre for Cross-disciplinary Chalk research (C3), which is supported by Maersk Oil. The core of the research group consists of up to 5 PhD students, two assistant professors financed by the project and additional assistant/associate/full professors and Maersk Oil staff. The different project participants have backgrounds in geophysics, sedimentology, stratigraphy, numerical modelling, geochemistry, palaeontology/ palaeoecology and engineering. The ultimate aim of the research group is to improve the qualitative and quantitative understanding of chalk depositional systems and heterogeneity of chalk reservoirs.
