One PhD scholarship for the project Sources and nature of remanent magnetization and susceptibility: Keys to interpretation of magnetic anomalies over continental lithosphere is available at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Geology and Mineral Resources. The PhD position is for a period of four years and is financed by the Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology.
The PhD position will focus on understanding the nature of crustal magnetization and modeling of crustal magnetic anomalies. Magnetic properties will be correlated with magnetic anomalies at ground, airborne and satellite scale. One of the primary project aims is to distinguish relative contributions of induced and remanent magnetization to the lithospheric magnetic field, which is a major objective of the upcoming SWARM satellite mission. Depending on the candidate, the projects may be fine-tuned to focus on mineralogy/petrology, or on the geophysical modeling. The project requires field work.
The Department of Geology and Mineral Resources Engineering owns and has access to state-of-the-art laboratories, including magnetic instruments, optical - scanning microscopes and electron microprobe, X-ray analytical tools, a unique mineral-processing laboratory and access to TEMs and the nanolab at NTNU.
