IMAU is looking for a motivated PhD student (m/f) to study the dynamics of ice ages. Our understanding of the physics of these major climate transitions is despite the ample geological evidence still rather limited. Over the course of the years we developed a modelling structure to unravel marine benthic records in self-consistent records of temperature, ice volume and sea level in order to study the leads and lags in the climate system on long time scales.
In this project we aim to extend this work by strengthening the climate modelling part with a simplified climate model and including a carbon cycle model such that CO2 variations can be solved as well. As a result all major climate variables can be studied at the same time. This will help us to understand for instance glacial inception and the Mid Pleistocene Transition.

The Institute for Marine and Atmospheric research Utrecht (IMAU) is an interfaculty research institute that focuses on the fundamental aspects of the climate system. Research is organized in five main themes: ice and climate, ocean circulation and climate, atmospheric physics and chemistry, atmospheric dynamics and boundary layer meteorology and Coastal and shelf sea dynamics. The IMAU includes some 15 faculty members, 15 postdocs and 30 PhD students. The graduate programme is organized in the Buys Ballot research school.
