The PhD position is embedded in the project 'Sand transport beneath broken waves in the surf zone' funded by the Dutch Technology Foundation STW. You will focus on the role of turbulence generated by wave breaking on sand suspension and subsequent transport.
During wave breaking, surface-generated turbulent eddies are injected into the water column that, when they reach the sea bed, forcefully lift sand into the water column. A quantitative understanding of this entrainment, and its subsequent effect on sand transport from and to the beach, is lacking, yet crucial to improve the skill of process-based coastal-evolution models.
Your work will be based on the analysis of two recently collected field data sets of turbulence and sand concentrations, combined with insights from large-scale laboratory experiments and two numerical research models. You will have the possibility to collect additional field data to extend the range of conditions already covered by the existing data sets. You will carry out part of the modeling at the University of Delaware, USA. You will use the insights gained to develop a new, well-founded practical sand transport formulation that will be implemented into Dutch operational coastal- evolution models. Deltares, DHV, Alkyon/Arcadis, Royal Boskalis Westminster nv and Rijkswaterstaat are members of the project’s user committee.
