The Department of Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is seeking a PhD student in relation to characterization of ashes from biomass combustion for energy production. The PhD fellowship is part of a multi-disciplinary research project ASHBACK coordinated by University of Copenhagen.

The main focus of the PhD student is based on laboratory investigations to determine potential release of toxic constituents from biomass ashes when these ashes are applied on land for utilization of their fertilizer value. Six additional PhDs hosted at other project partners are part of the ASHBACK project. These PhDs address other aspects of biomass ash utilization, such as field experiments, toxicity assessments, and determination of bioaccumulation.



Responsibilities and tasks


Based on biomass combustion ash samples collected by the project, the PhD will design, plan, and carry out laboratory scale leaching experiments to quantify potential release of contaminants from biomass ashes. Focus will be on inorganic constituents. The PhD will evaluate and to the extent possible determine release mechanisms based on geochemical process understanding and modeling.

Experiments for simulating interaction of the released contaminants with relevant soils will be carried out and evaluated relative to the field experiments established within the project. Focus will be on quantifying potential mobility of contaminants from the biomass ashes in various utilization scenarios. The outcome of the PhD will support other activities within the ASHBACK project. The PhD will be carried out in close collaboration with another PhD focusing on field experiments (hosted by University of Copenhagen).
