The doctoral programme amounts to 240 credits, the equivalent of four years of full time studies. The programme formally ends with the doctoral candidate publicly defending her/his published doctoral thesis. The primary obligation of the holder of a limited tenure doctoral position is to successfully fulfill her/his third cycle education ending with an approved Ph.D. thesis.
Regulations for limited tenure employment as a doctoral student are found in Higher Education Ordinance (chapter 5, 1-7). Only those persons who have been formally accepted to doctoral studies by the department can be eligible for limited tenure employment as a doctoral student.
In addition to their own doctoral studies doctoral students can be required to perform departmental duties such as teaching, research and administrative work in accordance with the terms of the regulation, amounting to 20 percent of full time.
