CASA comprises the chairs Scientific Computing (SC) and Applied Analysis (TA). CASA’s major research objective is to develop new and to improve existing mathematical (both analytical and numerical) methods for a wide range of applications in science and engineering.

Project Description

Ray-tracing is a widely used simulation method for optical design. In illumination engineering the photometric parameters are computed from a very large collection of rays, that are followed (traced) from a surface at the source to a target surface, through an optical system. These computations are usually quite involved. The purpose of this project is to develop and analyze a new ray-trace method based on the phase space representation of the optical system.

This new method is more accurate and efficient than existing methods. The challenge is to design this method, such that far less rays are needed than what is usual, to accurately simulate the optical system. The novel ray-trace method will be implemented in a new design tool for optical systems, enabling complicated designs of LED luminaires as well as other optical systems. The project is a collaboration between the SC-group and Philips Lighting (PL). Project supervision will be done by dr.ir. Jan ten Thije Boonkkamp (SC), dr.ir. Wilbert IJzerman (PL) and dr.ir. Teus Tukker (PL). The PhD student will be part-time seconded at Philips Lighting.
