The common theme of the research at the Laboratory for Cognitive Neurology (LCN) is the integration between models based on functional imaging studies in the intact brain and studies in patients with focal cortical ischemic lesions or early-stage cortical neurodegenerative disease (Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal lobar degeneration).
The cognitive domains that we are studying are spatially selective attention, and language and semantic memory. In the attention domain, this has led to a relatively detailed model of functional specialisation in parietal cortex. In the language domain we have mainly focused on the processing of meaning of words and pictures and on changes in the system for associative-semantic processing in patients and how this leads to language dysfunction. Recently we have acquired a large cohort of cognitively intact older adults that we are studying with multimodal imaging, including task-related fMRI, volumetric MRI, diffusion-tensor imaging as well as 18F-amyloid PET.
