The Division of Atomic Physics at the Faculty of Engineering (LTH), Lund University, Sweden has a staff of over 40 researchers including guest researchers and graduate students. The research at the division is mainly based on the use of lasers, ranging from diode lasers to terawatt lasers at the High-Power Laser Facility.
Some areas of research are: basic atomic physics including interactions between intense laser-fields and matter and VUV/XUV laser spectroscopy, quantum electronics, quantum optics and solid state spectroscopy, applied molecular spectroscopy, laser applications in medicine and biology, and industrial applications.
Job assignments
The curriculum for this doctoral position includes both experimental and theoretical research on ultrasound-guided optical imaging and upconverting nanoparticles as contrast agents for biomedical imaging.
The experimental work involves developing measurement techniques that exploit the properties of these techniques in an optimal way, verification of this in both tissue phantoms and animal studies, as well as participation in studies where the techniques are used to solve biomedical problems. The student may also participate in improving the synthesis process of upconverting nanoparticles.
The more theoretical aspects of the research will include data analysis as well as tomographic reconstruction of signals from tissue or tissue phantoms. Improved algorithms may be needed to analyze the signals optimally. Such development will then be part of the studies.
Furthermore, the studies may also include work within related research projects in biomedical optics with various applications. Such research may be photon time-of-flight measurements to extract the optical properties and spectroscopy of gases inside tissue cavities for diagnostic purposes. The PhD studies contain a course part and a scientific project. Teaching on undergraduate level might also be a part of the job.
