The department of Shipping and Marine Technology offers a coherent education and research in a wide range of areas such as maritime environment, human factors, hydrodynamics, marine structures and maritime safety. Our research helps to improve the efficiency of vessels and their safety, the marine environment and the working environment for the crew.
The department is responsible for three masters programs, educating master mariners, marine engineers and shore-based personnel in shipping. We currently have approximately 90 employees, of which around 80 are researchers. Our offices are on the dynamic and expanding Chalmers Campus Lindholmen. Here we have the most comprehensive simulation center for marine transport, cargo handling, navigation and communication.
Information about the research group
The PhD student position is organizationally under the division of Marine Design and the research group Marine Structures. Examples of research activities which are led and carried out by the senior researchers and the PhD students in the group are marine structural engineering, collision and grounding, fatigue and fracture, composite mechanics, risk and reliability analysis, structural stability, damage stability, seakeeping, analysis of wave loads and numerical methods as tools in ship motions, construction and design. The research aims at contributing to develop the field of marine structures with emphasis on maritime safety and sustainability.
