The PhD-student position is affiliated to the Center for Climate and Safety, which is a competence center in the field of management of climate-related risks. Admission as a PhD student is done in Public Health Science at the Department of Health and Environment. One of the Public Health research profiles focuses on safety and security. The employment starts as soon as possible, but no later than1 Sept 2011.
Description
Every natural disaster opens a unique opportunity for the society to investigate and learn about the hazards, the vulnerabilities in the society and the existing management capacity. The PhD-student will develop methods for systematic analysis of heavy rainstorms and floods, including a wide description of the disaster event and its consequences for human health, ecosystems and the societal infrastructures.
The analysis shall also determine the relation between the hydro-meteorological course of event and the characteristics of the damages. The purpose of the analysis is to learn about the events but also to study the different phases of the flood risk management, including preventive and mitigative efforts. Lessons learned from previous events can be used for improvements of society's flood risk management. The project requires cooperation with students and researchers within geoscience, political science and engineering sciences, and with relevant stakeholders.
Other type of duties, usually teaching and societal collaboration, will require up to 20% of the student's time. Local guidelines exist for salary levels.
