The Department of Biomedical Engineering is a department interfacing and integrating engineering and biomedical sciences. The department is organized into 4 divisions:

1) molecular bioengineering,

2) biomechanics and tissue engineering,

3) biomedical imaging and informatics, and

4) biosignals and regulation.

In the second division, the section Soft Tissue Biomechanics & Engineering is focused on a quantitative understanding of the ability of soft tissues to adapt to mechanical loading by changing structure and composition. Next to this to this we want to understand the limitations of the system leading to tissue damage and loss of functionality.

Project description: A pressure ulcer (Dutch term: doorliggen, drukwonden) is a tissue degeneration as a result of a prolonged mechanical loading on soft tissues (skin, fat, muscle). These ulcers are primarily found in bedridden or wheelchair bound individuals. The ulcers are painful, difficult to treat, depressing and isolating for the patient and can be life threatening. Early detection of these ulcers and identifying patients at risk is essential to reducing the prevalence and incidence of pressure ulcers.
