A PhD studentship is available in the Energy Technology research group, which fully covers University tuition fees (at EU/UK level) and provides a tax-free bursary of L13,600 per year, rising annually (each October) in line with the UK Government (EPSRC) recommended rate, for a 3-year duration.
EU/UK fees : L3560 p.a., Overseas fee: L15,500 p.a. (figures to be confirmed, and subject to annual increase).
This position is available to EU/UK applicants only, unless additional scholarships are obtained by the student to cover the overseas fees difference (i.e. L12000 for 2010/11).
Project description:
The project aims to investigate interactions between dissolution/ nucleation processes and hydrodynamic flows. A primary focus is to analyse the effects of dissolution/ nucleation on the stability of a plane parallel flow, and to examine the effects of the hydrodynamic flow on the rate of dissolution/ nucleation process. The results will be valuable for modelling of the various industrial processes, including cleaning, solvent extraction, enhanced oil recovery and enhanced aquifer remediation.
The student hired for the project will develop a parallel numerical code for direct modelling of flows of a miscible binary system. The diffuse interface approach will be utilised. A hard-working student with good background in Physics, Mathematics, and especially in Fluid Mechanics is sought. Knowledge of one of the programming languages (preferably, Fortran) is essential. Knowledge of MPI will be an advantage.
