A three-year PhD position is available in the Institute for Theoretical Solid State Physics at the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research (IFW) in Dresden (http://www.ifw-dresden.de/institutes/itf). The project concerns the use and further development of ab initio wavefunction-based methods for the investigation of the correlated electronic structure of solids.

Of main interest is the interplay between charge, spin, and orbital degrees of freedom in 3d compounds. Such couplings and correlation effects give rise to very peculiar features in, e.g., photoemission, absorption, and x-ray scattering spectra. The requirements for this PhD position are a Master degree or equivalent in physics or theoretical chemistry and sufficient knowledge of quantum mechanics. It would be an advantage to have experience with computer programming. For recent work in this area see, e.g., Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 256404 (2007) and New J. Phys. 11, 023023 (2009).
