A PhD studentship is available in the Power Electronics and Energy Conversion Group of the Electrical Engineering Division of Cambridge University Department of Engineering. The project, supported by Jaguar Land Rover, focuses on the low voltage electrical system of cars. The low voltage system, currently 12 V, supplies an ever-increasing load with the increase in electrically-operated systems such as electric steering and brakes. The overall motivation for the move towards electrically-actuated systems is to reduce vehicle emissions.
The studentship will mainly be concerned with the development of a system model for the entire automotive system, including the alternator, energy storage (battery plus possibly other short-term storage such as supercapacitors), power converters and electrical loads. For some aspects, the system model will utilise the work of collaborating partners. The model, which will make use of typical drive-cycle data from JLR, will then be used to study means of improving overall system performance, such as using higher bus voltages.
