The Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies (MPIfG) provides an attractive research environment for talented postdoctoral fellows. It offers up to four postdoctoral fellowships a year, including one specially designated for researchers from Central and Eastern Europe.

Scholars whose research relates to the substantive concerns of the institute's research program (see www.mpifg.de -> Research) and whose PhDs have been completed less than three years before the fellowship would begin are eligible for the MPIfG Postdoctoral Fellowships. Young researchers who have completed their dissertation and are, for example, assistant professors without tenure, "wissenschaftliche Assistenten," or "Juniorprofessoren" are encouraged to apply if they can get a leave of absence from their university positions.

Scholars from Central and Eastern Europe whose research relates to the substantive concerns of the institute’s research program and deals with the politics, societies and markets of Eastern Europe, preferably in comparison with other countries, are eligible for the CEEC Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Their PhD should have been completed less than three years before the fellowship would begin. Applicants should have an M.A. or doctoral degree from a Central or East European university, and they must have good command of spoken and written German or English.

Awards are made on the basis of scholarly excellence and of a research proposal outlining a project to be pursued at the MPIfG. Stipends are based on the fellowship guidelines of the Max Planck Society. They are not subject to income tax or social security contributions. During their tenure fellows are expected to be resident in Cologne and participate in the intellectual life of the institute.

Please submit your application for admission to the MPIfG Postdoctoral Program online: www.mpifg.de/forschung/postdoc_program_en.asp.
You may apply as of November 1 for a fellowship starting in October of the following year. The deadline for applications is January 31. Awards will be made and applicants notified in May.
