The Department of Bioorganic Chemistry (Prof. Wessjohann) has several openings for postdoctoral fellows and Ph.D.-students. The latter requires the completion of a European master or an equivalent degree of an institution accepted by the Martin - Luther - Universitt Halle - Wittenberg, and fluency in English or German. Alternatively, in special cases, the Ph.D. study can be undertaken in cooperation with another university in Germany or abroad. Some positions are within projects funded by the EU (Bionexgen), the BMBF or industry.

Postdoctoral fellow positions:

No. 10.1

The standard host will be E. coli, but other bacterial or fungal hosts may be required.

No. 10.2 (EU)

Application of oxidizing enzymes (P450, Peroxidases, Hydroxylases). The work will include the selection of suitable enzymes or strains and their application in lab scaIe semipreparative organic synthesis. Most likely P450 enzymes will show the desired properties, but more stable oxidases are preferred if they allow regio- and chemoselective reactions.

Ph.D. student positions

You are interested to work cooperatively in a team with other chemists and life scientists, also from industry, as part of a chemical synthesis program aiming at the development of new biologically active compounds with a better activity profile than current ones.

You are interested in the development of biocatalytic methods and assays relevant for the discovery and production of food ingredients or drugs, and eventually upscaling.

No 10.5 (EU)
Molecular biologist or biochemist interested to identify and clone genes for methyl transferases and related enzymes, and to involve in protein (re-)engineering efforts by rational and evolutionary methods. The work will be done in cooperation with the department of cell and metabolic biology.

No 10.6
Ph.D. student in the computational life sciences / computational chemistry like bioinformaticians, or biochemists, biotechnologists, pharmacists, and chemists with a keen interest in computational work and the ability to integrate into an interdisciplinary team working on the (re-)design of proteins, substrates and inhibitors. Bioinformatics, chemoinformatics or modelling experience is welcome.
