One postdoctoral position will be available September 2010 (or as agreed) for at least two years.The project is co-financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation and the European CoFund (FP7) and focuses on the role of Eph receptors on angiogenesis and cancerogenesis.
Eph receptors and their ligands (ephrins) play a key role in angiogenesis, axonal guidance and cellular targetting. For the past 10 years our laboratory has been investigating the role of this receptor/ligand family in developmental, inflammatory and carcinogenic processes.
In vitro studies: Various molecular genetic, cell biological (among others, various in vitro angiogenesis assays) and biochemical methods will be used to characterize the biological functions and signaling pathways downstream of these proteins. In vivo studies: One project will dissect the role of EphB4 receptors in capillary regeneration after acute glomerulonephritis (Thy 1.1 nephritis in the rat, and/or Habu snake venom nephritis in the mouse). The other project will study the role of intrauterine hypoxia on renal angiogenesis. In addition to the experimental project, postdoctoral fellows will have the opportunity to be trained in communication and leadership skills.
Requested background: We seek a highly motivated candidate with a background in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry or related field. Good experience in animal experiments is mandatory.
Working conditions: The Department of Nephrology, University of Bern, comprises 5-6 groups working on human genetics, transcription regulation, signal transduction and inflammatory processes. We are part of a national network of scientists working in the fields of renal physiology and pathophysiology.
