The University of Stavanger invites applications for a three-year doctorate scholarship in Marine Technology at the Faculty of Science and Technology in the Department of Mechanical and Structural Engineering and materials Science, beginning December 1st, 2013 or by appointment.
The title of the project is “Design of Offshore Wind Turbines”.
Scope of the PhD project:
1. The candidate shall identify design limitations for offshore wind turbines taking the relevant wave and current conditions into account. Special attention shall be paid to:
a) Design conditions that could lead to structural collapse of a group of wind turbines, such as breaking waves and/or tsunamis.
b) Dynamics during breaking wave incidents.
2. The work shall be carried out by comparing simulated waves with laboratory measured (breaking) wave conditions.
3. The candidate shall work closely with NORCOWE’s industry participants.
4. It should be realized that the work performed will open up for careers in the Wind Energy Industry or in the Oil and Gas Industry as methods used in common by these industries are employed in the research work.
The position is funded by NORCOWE, a consortium of companies working on subjects related to offshore wind energy. The student must participate actively in NORCOWE’s arrangements. This is a trainee position that will mainly give promising researchers an opportunity for professional development leading to a doctoral degree.
