The Center for Philosophy of Religion at the University of Notre Dame announces grant funding sponsored by the John Templeton Foundation for research focused on the biological and psychological nature and utility of pain and suffering, and/or the relations between pain and suffering and the problem of evil.
This grant program provides up to $300,000 for up to two years (although applications that request amounts greater than $70,000 will require special justification for the additional funding). Scholars are strongly encouraged to apply as interdisciplinary teams, so as to enhance the scientific, philosophical, and theological sophistication and subtlety of the outcomes of the research. Where appropriate, principal investigators (PI’s) are also encouraged to apply (by request in their cover letter) to spend one year in residence as a Fellow of the Center for Philosophy of Religion at the University of Notre Dame.
Those who elect to spend a year in residence may request up to $10,000 relocation and housing stipend that will not count against the total award cap. PI’s who elect not to spend the year in residence will be expected to be travel to the University at least once during the year to present work in progress to members of the Center for Philosophy of Religion and to interact with other fellows and faculty at the University. Funding for such travel will be provided as a component of the award.
In addition, fellows will have access to up to $25,000 in joint funding to convene a two-day workshop in the late spring of 2011 on the theme of Evil, Pain, and the Nature of Mind. This workshop will enable fellows to showcase and receive feedback on their work, and promote a broader research agenda on these topics
