The doctoral programme aims to train researchers and specialists in the historical-archaeological area: the scholar must be able to deal with the analysis of processes of formation and transformation of ancient civilizations which moved within the orbit of the Mediterranean by means of the most advanced methodological instruments and with a capacity for critical analysis both on a chronological basis (from Prehistory to the Middle Ages) and on a geographical basis (European and Mediterranean countries).
Established in agreement with the University of Udine and Trieste, the PhD programme is designed according to a formula that is linked to a centuries-old tradition of studies, but at the same time looking to the future through the use of highly innovative methodologies and technologies.
The name of Ancient Heritage Studies reflects a unified vision of the ancient world and the variety of topics and disciplines dealing with the historical and interpretation problems posed by monuments and texts according to their own specific methodologies and techniques, and indicates at the same time their fundamental complementarity and common goals. The PhD program is divided into three curricula:
- Philological-literary: Transmission of texts and textual criticism, intertextuality, translations, literary history, exegesis of texts, critical edition of texts of medieval tradition and papyri,
- Archaeological: Archaeological research on prehistory and protohistory, the Near East, the Aegean, the Classical, Medieval and Post-medieval World
- Historical: historical and historical-philological research on the ancient Near East, the Aegean and the Greek-Roman World.
