On 8 September 2011 TU Delft welcomed 24 new scholarship recipients. During a special reception, these international students were introduced to staff members and fellow students.
In his word of welcome, the Rector Magnificus, professor Karel Luyben, said he was proud to receive such talented students at the TU Delft: “It is your quality, ambitions and knowledge we want to encourage. So that you can become true TU Delft ambassadors and experience a magnificent continuation of your careers in science or technology”.
The event took place in the Faculty Room of TU Delft’s Science Centre, a venue where the university’s past and future meet in stylish surroundings. The Science Centre is located in the former building of the Faculty of Mining Engineering and Petroleum Extraction.
Christoper Watson (USA), who will be studying in the Faculty of Applied Sciences, said he was very happy to be in Delft because as an international student it offers him the unique opportunity to experience a new culture while benefitting from excellent teaching and state-of-the-art research
facilities.
And Agustin Ortega Garcia (Mexico, Faculty of Civil Engineering) remarked, that he looked forward to studying in Delft: “You should try things in order to achieve new heights. I want to improve myself and this MSc in Civil Engineering will help me reach that goal. What better place to learn about Hydraulics than in the Netherlands?”
Twelve of these 24 students received a scholarship from the Justus and Louise van Effen foundation.
The others were awarded scholarships by the Delft Research-based Initiatives (DRIs). These research initiatives in the domains Health, Energy, Environment and Infrastructures & Mobility, were set up to pay extra attention to developing solutions for today’s major scientific and social issues. This was reflected in the fields of study of the candidates chosen, they all show a firm interest in and background related to one of the four research domains
