The accelerator physics group performs research towards future particle accelerators with special focus on the action of the accelerating electro-magnetic field on the particle beams and on the high power radio frequency (RF) systems required to power the accelerating structures. The group is collaborating since many years in the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) project at the CERN laboratory for which the university has built a Two-beam Test Stand (TBTS).
This test stand is currently being used for research in the third generation CLIC Test Facility (CTF3) at CERN in Geneva. The group participates also in two free electron laser (FEL) projects at DESY in Hamburg, for which the University has built an optical replica synthesizer (ORS) for the free electron laser FLASH and will build a "laser heater" for the X-ray free electron laser XFEL, respectively. The group has recently started a collaboration with the European Spallation Source (ESS) for which the university currently is building up a superconducting RF test facility in Uppsala.
