Two open PhD positions at the University of Stavanger
Tidal News is a collaborative research project between the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at University of Stavanger (UiS) and the Networks and Distributed systems group at the Informatics Department, University of Oslo. One position is funded by the Norwegian Research Council, and another PhD position may be funded by the University of Stavanger if a suitable candidate is found.
The research will be carried out in collaboration several highly reputed research groups, including the Computer Systems group of VU University Amsterdam, in particular with the group headed by Maarten van Steen, the Middleware Systems Research Group at the University of Toronto, Canada, the University of Trento, Italy, and the University of California, San Diego.
Within this project framework, there are two available PhD positions at the University of Stavanger. Students hired in the project will be co-supervised by members of the Tidal News consortium.

A PhD position is a regular job with social benefits and with salary starting from 383,900 NOK per year (approximately 65,000 USD). The position is for the period of three years.
Host Institution and Environment
The University of Stavanger, Norway, has about 8,500 students and 1,200 administration, faculty and service staff. The academic activity is organized in 3 faculties, the Museum of Archaeology and also includes two national centers of expertise. Many of the externally funded research activities are made in collaboration with our research institute, International Research Institute of Stavanger (IRIS). Situated in the most attractive region in the country, the University can offer a multitude of cultural- and leisure activities. Considering its 300,000 inhabitants, the region can also offer good housing opportunities and a dynamic labour market. The University of Stavanger was officially opened January 2005. However, the academic roots of the University go further into the past. One of the subject fields dates back to 1912, while the width of our current academic and research facilities progressed from 1970s to this day.
The distributed systems group at the University of Stavanger is part of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The department has about 10 PhD students working in various fields of computer science. Furthermore, our group have well established links to national and international research institutions. We conduct collaborative research projects that are funded by Norwegian research funds.
