The MSt in Creative Writing is a two-year, part-time course offering a unique combination of high contact hours, genre specialisation, and critical and creative breadth.The MSt is Oxford University's first postgraduate course in Creative Writing, and builds on the success of the popular Undergraduate Diploma, now entering its eighth year. The MSt offers a clustered learning format of five Residences, two Guided Retreats and one Placement over two years. The Residences and Retreats are of three-days' duration, amounting to around 120 contact hours of workshops, seminars, individual tutorials, and sessions with visiting readers and speakers. These events are fully residential, intensive experiences, where students and tutors work together in an environment highly conducive to developing creative abilities and critical acumen. Our tutors are all prize-winning fiction writers, poets and dramatists and you will work with readers and speakers at the cutting edge of their critical and creative worlds.The Placement, which provides hands-on experience of writing in the real world, in for example a literary periodical, a theatre, a funding body or a literary agency, lasts between one and two weeks. The first year concentrates equally on prose fiction, poetry and drama. There is a significant critical reading and analysis component, which is linked to the writerly considerations explored in each of the three genres.
