The LUISS Master in European Studies aims at providing the student with a global idea of Europe and the European Union, dealing with its history, law, economics, political organisation and policies. The Master lasts one year, and is taught entirely in English. Based in Rome, it pays particular attention to issues of Mediterranean relations and cooperation.

The Master programme is a full-time nine-month programme structured in two semesters, running from October to February and from March to June. The first semester will be devoted to lectures and classes in five core courses; the second semester to lectures and classes in six elective courses. A final dissertation is required. Students who, at the Bacheloras level, have not developed the academic skills necessary to successfully attend the Master, will be asked to attend one or more preliminary courses in the month of September.

ABOUT THE MASTER

Aims

At the end of the LUISS Master students will be able to understand Europe and European institutions.
That is, they will know:
- the problems Western European countries had to face and to solve in the twentieth century in order to become reasonably functioning liberal democracies [according to the Atlantic standard set by Great Britain and the USA];
-how the economic and financial integration of Western European countries has advanced since 1945;
-why, how and overcoming which obstacles Western European countries have decided to surrender a significant part of their sovereignty to a new and unprecedented political organism such as the European Union;
-what treaties and laws Europeans have devised in order to underpin that organism;
-what policies the EU is implementing, and how;
-how European political systems were and are being changed by their interaction with European institutions;
-how the EU interacts with countries in the Mediterranean basin, in particular as far as energy and migration issues are concerned.

Students of the LUISS Master will also have the possibility to gain a deeper and more specialised knowledge on several fields of EU activity - from telecommunication to competition law, to intellectual property policy.

Programme Structure

Students who, at the Bacheloras level, have not developed the academic skills necessary to successfully attend the Master, will be asked to attend one or more preliminary courses. The preliminary courses will be activated on the basis of studentsa needs, and will take place in the month of September.

In the main programme, starting on September 29th, students will have to acquire 60 credits:

-Lecture attendance and examinations in five core courses ( 25 credtis )
-Classwork and essay-writing in those same core courses. Students will be required to write one essay for each core course, plus three more essays chosen among those same courses (10 credits)
-Lecture attendance, classwork and examinations in six elective courses (18 credits)
-Final dissertation (7 credits)

Students having worked extensively in the field of European Studies at the degree level may ask to replace lecture attendance and examinations in some or all of the core courses with extensive research work and essay writing, supervised by an individual tutor.
Students will have the possibility to attend a course in Italian language and culture.
In addition to curricular teaching, students will be required to attend a number of conferences and short seminars held by distinguished scholars and/or people holding or having held top positions in the EU or European countries.
In addition to curricular teaching, students will be asked to participate in simulation exercises on negotiation and decision in the European Union, led by Christian Lequesne.
The LUISS Master will endeavour to offer all the students the possibility of an internship either in a EU institution or in a European national institution dealing with the Union.

Schedule

The time schedule of the LUISS Master will be as follows:
-September: preliminary courses
-October-January: core courses - 175 hours of lectures, 15 per week in 15 weeks; class work and essay-writing
(Christmas break: December 20th 2008 - January 12th 2009)
-February: examinations in the core courses
-March-May: elective courses - 126 hours of lectures and class work in 13 weeks
(Easter break: April 9th - 15th 2009)
-June: examinations in the elective courses
-March-July: research work for the dissertation
-July-September: stage

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Armed with their LUISS Guido Carli Master students will be able to apply for jobs:
-in EU institutions;
-in the public sector in EU countries;
-in the public sector in countries having significant relations with the EU and with European and Mediterranean countries in general;
-in the private sectors both within and outside Europe which have dealings with the public institutions of the EU and European countries.
Students holding the LUISS Master degree will have the possibility to continue studying at LUISS in the Laurea Magistrale in International Relations (two years, in Italian). In that case, a substantial amount of the exams taken in the Master in European Studies will count toward the fulfillment of the requirements of the Laurea Magistrale, significantly shortening the percourse to the degree.

TARGET STUDENTS

Applicants for the LUISS Master must have completed a three-year Bachelor or equivalent degree within the fields of Social sciences, Humanities or Languages by the end of 2008. In the Italian University system, therefore, the LUISS Master in European Studies is a first-level Master (Master di primo livello).

ADMISSION

Requirements
-The LUISS Master has a limited participation number of max. 35 students.
-Applicants must hold a Bachelor degree in either Social Sciences, Languages or Humanities. The degree has to be completed within December 2008. The degree must be proved by either a University certificate including a full list of exams with obtained marks, or a self-certification.
-Applicants must send: a detailed Curriculum Vitae and a Motivation Letter.
-All applicants will have to present two Reference letters.
-Applicants must have an excellent knowledge of the English language. Except for native speakers and holders of a degree the course for which was taught in English, English proficiency must be certified, and may be asked to be demonstrated in a telephone interview.

Costs and Timelines
Tuition fees for the LUISS Master in the academic year 2008/09 have been fixed at 6.500 a.
Financial aid, based on merit as ascertained from the application, is available in the form of total or partial reduction of the tuition fees. We expect that at least 30% of the entering class will receive some form of financial aid.
Application deadline is Sunday, May 18th 2008. Online applications and those sent by ordinary mail must arrive within this date.
