A Practical Course on Protein Production, Purification and Investigation

Protein Science specializes in structure, function, and biochemical significance of proteins, their role in molecular and cell biology, genetics, and evolution, and their regulation and mechanisms of action. For example knowledge about proteins can be applied in vaccine development and protein production. Through the creation of innovative vaccines and biopharmaceuticals lives can be saved and health improved by effectively responding to the changing world (think about drug-resistance parasites). Other examples are unraveling the molecular mechanism of a disease (protein malfunction) but also for applications in biotechnology or basic research.In this course you learn to work with particular techniques used to study these protein properties. We will cover principles/methods/techniques that you can use to study a broad range of relevant questions, such as:

For students from the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry, Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, and related studies such as Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Life Sciences, Molecular Sciences, Bioinformatics, Biological Psychology or other interdisciplinary studies with a biological component.

Course aim
How can I produce a protein using bacteria? How can I purify a protein? How can I investigate the structure and function of a protein? How can I predict the structure and function of a protein?



Credits
3.0 ECTS creditsECTS is the standard European credit system, each ECTS credit is equivalent to 28 study hours. All courses are worth 3 ECTS. Because some education systems (such as the American universities) base their credits on contact hours, we have included the contact hours in the course description on our website.

Course fee
EUR 1350[Convert to USD]The tuition fee of this course is 1350,- and includes furnished accommodation and the orientation programme. If you select two consecutive courses and study with us for four weeks, you will receive a 10% discount on the second course fee.Some courses will include excursions. We will also organize trips and excursions as part of our social programme, which is a great way to get to know your fellow students and learn more about Amsterdam and the Netherlands. The social programme is not included in the tuition fee.
