Language is a tool to convey our ideas to others. But if we cannot use the tool effectively, our ideas get lost and never reach our listeners or readers. Or perhaps our struggle with language takes precedence over ideas, so that eventually we are not sure what it is we want to say anymore%BFThis course helps international students develop skills that they need in the course of their academic studies: writing essays and giving presentations.
Non-native English speakers are often at a disadvantage compared to native English speakers, struggling with grammatical and vocabulary problems, when they should be focusing on presenting their ideas and arguments. They often find it difficult to express their ideas in clear, fluent and coherent English, and resort to sentence structures and literal translation from their own native language instead.
This is a practical workshop that tackles essay writing and presentations from the point of view of non-native English speakers, focusing on English language sentence structure (verb structures, active voice); essay structure (topic sentence, coherence etc); avoiding plagiarism (paraphrasing, summarising, citations)

Target group
The University of Sussex International Summer School welcomes applicants from a wide range of educational backgrounds. Although most of you will be currently enrolled at a university or college, we also welcome applicants who have been away from education for some years, as well as highly committed senior high school students - for some courses a good general education, an open mind and lots of enthusiasm are the main qualifications. For some other courses you will see that prerequisites are listed - applicants for these courses are expected to submit transcripts to demonstrate that they have taken, or are currently taking, the necessary precursors.

The International Summer School provides an opportunity to meet and study with people from different countries and cultures, on a cosmopolitan campus.
