The Helsinki Summer School on Activity Theory and Formative Interventions was organized in Helsinki in 2010 and 2011, and attracted students from 16 countries. HSS-ATFI is based on the 20-year tradition of research and teaching conducted at the Center for Research on Activity, Development and Learning (CRADLE) at the Institute of Behavioural Sciences, the University of Helsinki. Lectures, workshops and discussions will take place with leading Finnish and international scholars in the field of activity theory and with scholars representing approaches closely related to activity theory.

The director of CRADLE, Yrjo Engestrom, will be actively involved in these lectures and discussions. Excursions to work organizations and research facilities will allow students to learn from ongoing developmental work research interventions conducted by researchers and practitioners in Helsinki. Tutored small group tasks are designed to acquaint the students with core literature and to formulate their interests for engaging in more demanding texts and studies in the future.

Target group
This course is designed for BA, MA and doctoral students aiming at careers in advanced human resource development, in workplace learning, and, more generally, in organisational development and change management. Also professionals in related areas are welcome.

Course aim
The course is designed to introduce cultural-historical activity theory rooted in the legacy of Vygotsky and Leontev as it has been developed and applied to learning and development in educational and work practices in Finland and other countries.The course provides interdisciplinary theoretical and methodological tools for studying the rapid and profound changes in the world of work, organizations, and technology. It is structured around the following content areas: The history and future of activity theory Work-related learning The methodology and practice of developmental work research interventions

Course fee
EUR 470: Course fee

The course fee can be paid with a credit card or with a bank transfer before the start of the Helsinki Summer School. It can also be paid upon your arrival in Helsinki. Degree and exchange students attending universities in the Helsinki area are exempted from the course fee. Degree and exchange students attending other Finnish universities are required to pay a half of the course fee (235 EUR).

EUR 150: Registration fee

The registration fee is 150 EUR additional fees for international students. Payment is due within seven days of receipt of written notification of your acceptance to Helsinki Summer School. If you register before 31 May 2012, you will receive a 50 EUR discount on the registration fee. The registration fee for degree or exchange students attending Finnish universities is 50 EUR. The registration fee is non-refundable. Payment may be made either by bank transfer or credit card (Visa and Eurocard/Mastercard only).If we do not receive a credit card payment or copy of the bank transfer within one week of notification of your acceptance, we will have no choice but to cancel your course reservation. Your application will, however, remain in our database and, if there are still places available, you may renew your registration simply by contacting us.

Course leader
The course leader is Docent and University Lecturer Annalisa Sannino from the CRADLE, Institute of Behavioural Sciences at the University of Helsinki. In her recent work she deals in particular with the connection between discourse and activity, and with
