This advanced course focuses on the practice of European Union Law. Participants receive hands-on insider analysis about the functioning of the European Union. The program is designed to combine seminars on different subjects as well as workshops supporting the topics addressed in these seminars or some aspects thereof.
The Total Law Method constitutes the backbone of the program and gives it its exceptional flavor.This year, the course will particularly focus on the European Union and the Individual. The Total Law team, led by Joseph Weiler, Joseph Straus Professor of Law and Jean Monnet Chair at New York University School of Law, is a unique blend of well known academics and senior officials working in the European Union institutions who have also written widely in the field.

Target group
The program brings together participants from all over the world and from diverse legal backgrounds, i.e. law students near completion of their law degree, law graduates and legal professionals, who are seeking further credentials and experience in the field. It may be particularly appealing to government officials and those aiming at a career in national, international and/or European civil service, and those who wish to apply for jobs in the field of European Union law.
Course aim
The course will improve the participants' skills by explaining how economic, social and political contexts shape the particular legal problem addressed and impact the thinking about its legal solution. The program will equip participants with the ability to understand the economic, social and political consequences of different legal outcomes. The discipline is Law. The focus is Law. But the premise is that Law cannot be understood, nor practiced professionally and competently, without understanding its broader contexts. Furthermore, this specificity of the Total Law method allows for the program to be appealing and enriching to participants coming from different disciplines.
Credits
6.0 ECTS creditsThe course awards three (3) Legal Studies credits (based on US credit transfer system, one CEU legal Studies credit equals 700 minutes of teaching), and is equivalent to six (6) credits ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). Participants who take and pass the examination at the end of the course will receive a CEU transcript with US credits and ECTS equivalent. Law school students should check with their home institution about the transfer of credit policies before applying to this program.
Course fee
EUR 790: The tuition fee is normally payable in full upon confirmation of acceptance of the CEU offer of a place of study in the advanced course. However, staggered payment can be arranged on a case-by-case basis for those participants who cannot pay the full fee at the time they confirm acceptance, providing that they pay a minimum of 20% tuition fees at the time of confirmation.The tuition fee includes participation in the summer course, some administrative costs, an orientation program and welcome pack, access to the CEU Library and IT facilities, reading materials, printing quota, and some social activities.
