Despite their different backgrounds (mainly from law and social sciences), PhD candidates in criminology often lack an advanced training in qualitative and legal research methods, or a platform where to discuss the methodological challenges within their projects. The course is open for PhD researchers from various disciplines preparing or conducting their fieldwork in the field of criminology. It will combine modules run by staff from the different universities involved in the DCGC, seminars for discussing readings and research progress, and time to work on their own research projects.
Five modules will focus on a) conducting ethnographic open interviews and participant observation; b) analyzing visual data (photos, images, films); c) using virtual methods on the Internet; d) applying a range of relevant legal methods (including content analysis of legal texts and jurisprudence, discourse analysis, case and comparative legal methods); and e) qualitative data analysis and reporting. During the seminars, the emphasis will be on 'doing research': candidates will be supervised on small assignments linked to their own PhD research projects. Previous knowledge on qualitative methods is required.
