This course addresses the foundations, components and procedures of qualitative data analysis looking at the methods of thematic analysis (TA), qualitative content analysis (QCA), cross-case analysis (CCA) and constant comparison analysis of grounded theory (GT). Being an advanced course, it requires that participants be cognizant with the notions of coding in qualitative analysis and fluent in their application in NVivo software. The course's premises are that rigorous and soundly executed analysis of qualitative data is of central importance in a research project since the findings' credibility depends on it.

Despite this, the majority of qualitative studies still fail to provide a transparent account of what analysis was carried out and how. There is also a widespread tendency to associate qualitative analysis with the mere identification of themes in the data and to report those themes using excessive quotes. This course tackles the problem of the 'black box' of qualitative analysis by focusing on some of the key, yet most neglected aspects, of current analytical practices: the relationship between analysis with design; the necessity to move beyond the identification of themes and to account for patterns in the data; building a solid audit trail to support claims; and using graphic displays that hold explanatory power to tell results. By the end of the course, participants will know when, how, and why to use TA, QCA, CCA and GT and to appraise the quality of qualitative analysis in published studies.
