The reference of 'Aesthetics', understood as a philosophical discipline, has widened during its relatively short history of use to encompass, not only issues connected to aesthetic experience and judgement, but also questions concerned with the philosophy of art more generally.
This course will tackle questions raised by Aesthetics in this wide sense. We shall focus on two areas, broadly speaking: firstly, the nature of aesthetic judgement, and secondly, the nature of art. We shall examine what aesthetic judgement is, how it differs from other sorts of judgement, whether it is in any sense "objective", and what its proper objects are. We shall also examine what art is, and how if at all it can be defined. The course will be assessed by an essay.

The University of Sussex International Summer School welcomes applicants from a wide range of educational backgrounds. Although most of you will be currently enrolled at a university or college, we also welcome applicants who have been away from education for some years, as well as highly committed senior high school students - for some courses a good general education, an open mind and lots of enthusiasm are the main qualifications.
