Migration has been an integral part of human history and has also contributed significantly to the making of the modern world. This course takes a transdisciplinary approach to questions of diaspora, identity and belonging by looking at migration from the time of slavery, to indentured labour, to forms of contemporary mobility, through the lens of history, anthropology and postcolonial studies.
In a world where mobility has long been the norm, why are migrants and their cultures still viewed as problematic by many nation states? How do migrants adapt to their new circumstances? How are diaspora communities formed? How do we represent cultures that no longer fit the paradigm of the nation state? And what are the consequences for ideas of self and belonging in a rapidly globalising world? By examining a range of issues including citizenship, trafficking, and changing religious identities, this course offers a critically engaged perspective on migration and modernity.
