Worldwide international migration is a large and growing phenomenon. Issues are often complex and dynamic and the role of international migrants in bringing about social and cultural change in the shared global quest for constructing more peaceful and respectful societies is often not given enough recognition. Hybrid cultures are still looked upon with suspicion even if they are widely celebrated in areas such as music and film, or in the consumption of ethnic foods and goods.
Migrants often fall victim to discriminatory or unfair practices at every stage of the migration process. The University of Sussex, with the setting up of the interdisciplinary Sussex Centre for Migration Studies, was one of the early pioneers in this field and consistently produces cutting edge research. On this course students will be introduced to the main concepts and theories of migration, and encouraged to nurture an interdisciplinary approach. Detailed case studies will provide the setting for analyzing different migration processes, as well as situations arising as a result of migration.

Target group
The University of Sussex International Summer School welcomes applicants from a wide range of educational backgrounds. Although most of you will be currently enrolled at a university or college, we also welcome applicants who have been away from education for some years, as well as highly committed senior high school students - for some courses a good general education, an open mind and lots of enthusiasm are the main qualifications. For some other courses you will see that prerequisites are listed - applicants for these courses are expected to submit transcripts to demonstrate that they have taken, or are currently taking, the necessary precursors.
