The Diary of Anne Frank is the most famous book ever written in Amsterdam. Composed during World War II in her place of hiding, this young Jewish woman's diary became an enormous posthumous bestseller after the war. This course explores why and how this book became so successful all around the world, focusing especially on how Anne Frank's story was told in different media over time. By studying the many adaptations of the story of Anne Frank, students will gain in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust and the Second World War in Europe and the way in which those events have been remembered in cultural memory in especially the Netherlands and the United States.Beginning with a close reading of Anne Frank'sThe Diary of Anne Frank, this course explores the different ways in which this narrative has been retold, through the past seventy years and in different media. The lectures provide students with a historical background to World War II, the Holocaust, and the postwar eraand provide a cursory understanding of how to interpret intermediality. During the seminars students study children's books, documentaries, movies, museum exhibits, music, plays, poems, and/or sculptures inspired by the story of Anne Frank.

Course aim
The course teaches students how to analyze visual texts in comparison to written texts. They will select their own individual project relating to the story of Anne Frank, and present and write about this in English.They will gain background knowledge about the Second World War and visit historicalsites, including Anne Franks hiding place which has become a museum.

3.0 ECTS creditsECTS is the standard European credit system, each ECTS credit is equivalent to 28 study hours. All courses are worth 3 ECTS. Because some education systems (such as the American universities) base their credits on contact hours, we have included the contact hours in the course description.

Course fee
EUR 1200[Convert to USD]The tuition fee of this course is 1200,- and includes furnished accommodation and the orientation programme. If you select two consecutive courses and study with us for four weeks, you will receive a 10% discount on the second course fee. Some courses will include excursions. We will also organize trips and excursions as part of our social programme, which is a great way to get to know your fellow students and learn more about Amsterdam and the Netherlands. The social programme is not included in the tuition fee.
