The main objective of this mini course is to introduce students to the field of aphasiology. Aphasia -- a specific language impairment resulting from acquired brain damage -- has attracted substantial attention from both linguists and psychologists. In this course, we will discuss contemporary approaches to the study of brain and language (such as the computational theory of mind) as well as more specific, linguistically - oriented theories of aphasia.
The focus of the course is on the analyses of experimental projects conducted with fluent and non-fluent aphasic speakers and on the interpretation of the obtained results. We will also dedicate time to the comparative psycholinguistic approach that attributes particular importance to cross-linguistic and cross-population investigation. In this regard, we will discuss some similarities and differences between typically developing children (and the mistakes they make in the course of language development) and language impair!
