Progress in astronomical observations is driven by technological advances in telescopes and instruments. This 2-week course introduces students to the basics of designing and constructing modern optical telescopes and instruments for astronomy and provides advanced lectures in a particular topic.


In 2011 the focus in the second half of the course will be on instruments that measure the polarization of light for the study of magnetic fields in the universe, the detection and characterization of exoplanets, and for remote-sensing of planetary atmospheres. Course subjects include the areas that an astronomer involved in instrumentation would need to know such as requirement definition, optical and opto-mechanical design, systems engineering and project management. These subjects are introduced in lectures and then applied to instrument designs and work in the optical laboratory.

Target group
Advanced Bachelors / beginning Masters with a background in astronomy and applied physics as well as proficiency in English.

Course aim
To introduce students to the methods and techniques used to develop and construct astronomical instruments. This ranges from conceptual, optical and mechanical design to project management skills. Particular emphasis will be given to hands-on work.
