In the context of the course, the students will learn the basics of membrane separation processes, modelling and optimization.The order of the lessons:-An introduction to separation processes, equilibrium based, rate governed separation processes-Separation efficiency definitions, calculations. Classification of separation processes-Membrane separation processes.
Pressure driven processes - membrane filtrations-Reverse osmosis: basic principles, membranes, modules, calculations, desalination plant modelling-Reverse osmosis: applications in food technologies, case studies-Ultrafiltration, Microfiltration, Nanofiltration: basic principles, membranes, modules, calculations, plant modelling-Ultrafiltration, Microfiltration, Nanofiltration: applications in food technologies, case studies-Basic principles of pervaporation.
Ethanol production process system modelling-An introduction to experimental designs and Statistical software: Factorial designs, response surface methodology (RSM). Experiments on the pervaporation: modeling of the ethanol yield.-Economic evaluation of the coupled distillery and pervaporation system with RSM.-Factorial designs, response surface methodology (RSM). Experiments on the membrane filtration: fruit juice clarification and preconcentration, modelling.-An outlook to real process systems: visit of a membrane system producer and/or food factory applying membrane separation processes.-Laboratory experiment: diafiltration of whey, modelling and optimization.-Exam

Course aim
Attendants will acquire a strong knowledge of basic principles of membrane separation processes in order to apply it in food technologies. The learned method allows analysis of industrial applications. To practice students will have laboratory exercises using laboratory and pilot scale membrane separation equipments.
