Provision of high quality and effective global healthcare is an on-going challenge for modern society. The ageing population has meant that there is now an even greater need to effectively utilise healthcare services. Technological advances now underpin the development of better healthcare in terms of providing more effective treatments that are cost-effective. Biomedical engineers are central to the development of novel technologies that can be translated into effective healthcare provision through close collaboration with clinical and industrial partners. The Biomedical Engineering course offers an exciting opportunity to learn the multidisciplinary skills required to deliver novel healthcare technologies that will have a high impact on the well-being of society. Students with an interest in physics, mathematics, engineering and medicine will benefit from our stimulating Biomedical Engineering course that is delivered by a team of internationally leading researchers in the field.The Biomedical Engineering course will offer students the opportunity to learn about this exciting and evolving discipline. The course consists of 6 units including mechatronics, electrical engineering, biomechanics, fluid mechanics, medical imaging and bioelectricity. Each unit is taught via a series of lectures and accompanying practicals that give a hands-on insight and experience of these subjects. Demonstrations will be given to the students about building a simple robot, using motion capture to analyse gait, measurement of blood flow using MRI and X-ray imaging. These will take place at St. Thomas' hospital. Furthermore, students will see the historical development of biomedical technology at London's Science Museum.

Course aim
The course aims are:- To develop an understanding of some of the physical principals of biomedical engineering - to include mechatronics, electrical engineering, biomechanics, fluid mechanics, medical imaging and bioelectricity;- To understand and experience the common applications of biomedical engineering - to include robotics, gait analysis and medical imaging;- To learn about the historical development of medical technology - this will include visits to the London museums.
