Throughout the summer school you will be supported by experienced international performers, historians and teachers of brass.The summer school is distinctive in relation to the quality of coaching that will be provided by players and teachers who have reached the highest levels of performance and education in the music industry.
The summer school takes an approach to performing with a brass instrument, with a special emphasis on using technique to communicate music.The history of each instrument and the effect of that history on the development of each instrument and its repertory will also be explored.Different musical genres that require alternative styles and techniques such as jazz and world music will also be explored as part of this inspiring summer school. An exploration of music and performance on early brass instruments will also be a feature of a busy week of teaching and performance activity.
One key focus of the intensive study week is exploration and mastery of the physical aspects of playing a brass instrument. This will be achieved through utilizing yoga, Alexander Technique and other relaxation methodology affecting your breathing. This fundamentally important relaxation theme, and its impact on the psychology of the player, will influence the ability of each student to communicate in a profound and memorable way with the audience.
The style of engagement of this brass summer school will be intimate and informal but demanding.The structure of the course is based around daily performance classes and masterclass with specialist teachers from the Royal Conservatoire.You will receive a 30 minute one-to-one lesson each day, play in one masterclass and in one concert. The week-long programme will be intensive but with time for individual and ensemble practice, rehearsal and culminate in an informal concert on the evening of the final day of summer school.Please see our website for a full course outline.

Target group
We are seeking a wide variety of brass players to participate in this intensive short course. We hope to welcome trumpet, trombone, horn and tuba players from around the world to join us in Glasgow for this first ever brass summer school at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.Students should be at least 17 years of age and have reached a minimum playing ability of around ABRSM Grade 7 or equivalent in order to fully benefit from this intensive summer school.Please see the course outline on our website for full details of student selection.
Course aim
The short course aims to develop in the individual brass player the importance of a whole mind and body approach to communicating music through their instrument.As well as concentrating on musical and physical awareness, you will explore the repertoire the various instruments inhabit and sometimes share.By the end of the summer school, you should have: greater awareness of the physical aspects of playing a brass instrument deeper understanding of the communication skills needed by the player broader knowledge of the repertory available to each instrument from its origins enhanced experiences of ensemble playing skills greater confidence in performing for an audience
